A review of Ojujucalaba’s In The Evening Ep project

Ojujucalaba officially delivered himself to Nigeria with the release of his debut 5 track EP titled “In The Evening”.

With “Protect Me” as the first track, I could pick up the artist’s Hip-Hop influences and I think it’s quite refreshing that in this body of work he was able to introduce us to some of the sub-genres he’s a fan of. I can hear it and hopefully he keeps delivering. This track was giving me straight vibes.

“Love Is Blind” as the second track on the project is in the category of what I call “Hot Trending” Afro Urban sounds reigning at the moment. He sold the theme message of the song and being able to once again express his vocal prowess with relatable lyrics were one of the things that makes that song a hit. I see this in my “Chills With Bae” playlist.

However, it was an interesting surprise hearing “Sengemenge” next. I really wasn’t just expecting to hear that Amapiano sound but even though the transition feels weird, it actually works. All I could hear was how artistic the artist is with a confidence to switch identity and delivery anytime. Hopefully I get to hear this more in the clubs.

The fourth track Where You Dey Go” was an earlier released single and has to be one of my favorite tracks on the EP. I’m glad the song is getting the acclaims it deserves now. I appreciated his voice texture & delivery. While It’s easy for that kind of song to get radio plays nowadays it’s equally exciting to see he has a future in the industry with a sound that can compete mainstream.

The last track “Nothing” solidified his Hip-Hop influences. The trap beat, subtle raps and singing going simultaneously was very clever and technical but he still didn’t lose us the listeners. The curiosity makes me want to hear him till the end of the track.

In summary, I believe Ojujucalaba is here to stay and he is also proving that he has all the technical skills needed to survive in the industry. Hopefully with a good management’s backing he could be on his way to grab a “Next Rated” nod.
